Peace of Mind
— Akhand Jyoti
The best way to attain true peace of mind is to cultivate in it a deep inclination toward renunciation. First, nurture the mind in a spirit of inner detachment, shielding it from the agitations of the outer world and steadily turning its gaze inward. The mind has a habitual tendency to wander outward, so it must be gently restrained, vigilantly guarded, and wisely governed. Subsequently, it should be continuously engaged in meaningful, creative, and benevolent activity so that the mind does not drift into emptiness or indolence. When the mind is thus inwardly detached yet outwardly dutiful, it gradually becomes free from anxiety and stress, and begins to move naturally toward peace and inner harmony.
The human mind may be likened to a vast and deep lake, whose hidden spring is the complex current of human instincts. When these instincts are restrained, refined, and channelized toward a noble ideal, then while drawing upon this purified reservoir, the direction and temperament of the mind are shaped, then mastering the mind with firm resolve and attaining spiritual serenity becomes an effortless unfolding. If the mind remains restless, there is but one fundamental cause: ignorance, and the deprivation of the mind from its own true source of strength and light.
When a person learns to understand the deepest impulses and innermost instincts of the mind, success begins to grace every endeavor; freed from selfishness, such a person advances steadily toward the supreme goal of life. The 'radiance of the rising Sun' then becomes the unfailing source of peace, redemption, and inspiration, and this light is nothing other than the harmonious union of the mind with the soul.
From that moment onward, there remains no cause to deviate from the absolute truth, and the spiritual seeker becomes a true philosopher, realizing the absolute reality in its wholeness and finding no obstacle in manifesting the divinity within. Such a person naturally withdraws from needless entanglements, grows ever more selfless, and rises to higher levels of refinement, unfoldment, and integral development in every dimension of life.
The key to enduring peace lies in mastering the thoughts that course through the mind. A mind endowed with the power of self-restraint neither entangles itself in sorrow and strife nor forfeits awareness of its innate potential. Only when we master the art of neutralizing negative influences with potent positive thoughts, and when those thoughts are ignited by the profound inspiration of the soul, does the ideal path reveal itself, guiding us toward the exploration of ultimate truth.
When the mind becomes entangled in any worldly subject or object, it loses sight of its original purpose and grows deaf to the inner voice of truth resonating from the depths. It forsakes its role as a mere instrument and becomes the central element, breeding weakness and rendering it incapable of any noble pursuit. Yet, when the mind casts aside all its flaws, it seizes the golden opportunity to delve into absolute truth, it naturally inclines toward inner peace — 'the soul's unquenchable thirst.'
This is the sacred path to ultimate peace that every seeker of spirituality must tread. True attainment of peace demands the resolute abandonment of all flaws and vices, coupled with steadfast pursuit of inner refinement. Only then does the personality align in profound harmony with the divine peace that has eternally enchanted and illuminated the cosmos.
The road to peace unfolds through unflinching endeavors of self-refinement, quenching the heart's profound thirst, and maintaining the mind in focused equanimity — this is the profound science of merging with divinity and mastering the mind's disposition. Every awakened heart must embrace this truth in all circumstances, illuminating its essence to advance resolutely on the path of peace and excellence. When spiritual peace dwells unshakably in the heart, no adversity or circumstance can disturb it, ensuring triumphant realization of its pristine perfection.
Achieving self-realization and attaining peace converge upon the same eternal truth through dual pathways; thus, the conscious cultivation of the self, coupled with vigilant practice in shunning distorted and negative thoughts, stands essential. In this way, our lives become radiant embodiments of happiness, beauty, and peace, propelling us forward with soundness, executing every task efficiently and ethically through crystalline understanding. This is the exalted path of peace, divinity, and grace upon which great souls are forged, and through their luminous example, the dilemmas of the world find resolution.
Peace is inherently pure and flawless, while unrest invariably stems from some hidden cause. With complete clarity enshrined in the heart, we inevitably elect peace; then the external world unfolds as an extension of our own inner radiance, a singular expression of the Supreme Being, wherein all existence gleams and resonates by the eternal vibration of the absolutely 'silent and enlightening' expression of the Supreme Divine.
