Universality of The Sun God

Akhand Jyoti

Mankind had recognized the vital role of the Sun in maintaining the cycle of Nature and existence of life on the Earth since pre-historic times.

Scriptures and traditional practices indicate that all ancient civilizations had been worshiping the Sun as God: with the names Savitra, Pushan and Surya in India, Ra in Egypt, Mithra and Asura in Iran, and Assuriya, Helios and Apollo in Greece, Jupitor sol in Rome (Italy) and Amateresu in Japan. The Incas of Peru and Aztecs of Mexico built magnificent Sun-temples and worshipped it as the Supreme Deity.

The Vedas revered Savita — the subtle body of the Sun — as the abode of the Brahmi Radiance of Gayatri: the Omnipotent, Primordial Supreme Divine Power, the Goddess of divine wisdom (Ritambhara Pragya), the mother of gods (Devamata). The Gayatri Mantra is revered as the origin of the Vedas (Vedamata). Japa of the Gayatri Mantra with meditation on rising Sun is the core of all major spiritual endeavors guided in the Vedic system.

The Sun: A Scientific Marvel

Scientific studies estimate that the Sun has been shining for the last four-and-a-half billion years with temperature at its core being over fourteen million degrees. Because of fusion, almost four million tons of Hydrogen is converted into energy in the Sun every second. The Sun thus produces hundred billion-billion (10¹⁸) kilowatts of energy every second — out of which only half-billionth part reaches the Earth. Even after reflecting back nearly 40% of this energy into space, the remainder is sufficient to generate about 2.5 kilowatts of power from sunlight falling on one hectare of the Earth's surface.

We have been informed of the powers of the Sun in our schools but we comfortably forget it. The Sun and its enormous boons have been almost taken for granted by most of us. It's time we not only optimize the use of solar energy, but also follow our rishis (Vedic Sages), who had benefited from the sādhanā of Sun as the pre-eminent source of prāṇa and inner intellectual awakening.
